The class visited Mt. Hope outside of Michael today where owners Renee and Jonah White told them about the history of the property. Mount Hope was a settlement originally built prior to 1840, when Calhoun County had a larger population of Native Americans than immigrants. Over time, the settlement developed into its own small community and later became known as a “poor farm.”

At its peak around 1900, Mount Hope included five tenant houses, along with two blacksmith shops, a sawmill, more than 15,000 orchard trees, a schoolhouse, and three separate cemeteries where 46 people are buried. At the heart of the settlement stood a massive three-story barn that served as the center of the community.

Today, Mount Hope has been beautifully preserved and transformed into a gorgeous rustic wedding venue, where its rich history and scenic setting provide a unique backdrop for celebrations.
